James River Splash: II

I’m not trying to be a copycat, but I’d written about my JR Splash experience on my own blog, so I decided to send it on over here. I’m currently on a swim sabbatical due to a kick to my right ear, which ruptured my eardrum, at a Richmond Tri Club open water swim last Friday. Just another thing to think about while OW swimming…anyway, on to the race report.

The James River Splash turned out to be among the best open water swims I’ve ever had, in terms of time, speed, and skill. Coupled with my quarter-century birthday, I couldn’t have asked for a better morning.

The morning of the race, several triathletes packed into my car and accompanied me to Robious Landing on the Southside of Richmond. There were well over 100 swimmers entered in the race. For a short warmup, I swam out for 5 minutes, feeling good and smooth. Then I turned around. I had to exert a significantly greater effort to get back to shore. It’s 9:18! I thought. I’d better get back so I don’t miss the start! Fortunately, I didn’t.

There were two waves; I was in the first. Yellow and green caps were distributed to the swimmers; I have no idea whether a different colored-cap meant anything or not. I was busy talking to Caroline when the race official shouted “GO!” I quickly put my head underwater and began swimming as fast as I could. I felt strong, and settled into a decent pace after maybe the first 7-10 minutes, while still feeling I was challenging myself. The race was so short that there were always swimmers surrounding you — not like Smith Mountain Lake or the Bay Swim where after the first mile or so the pack dissipated.

Caroline and I passed people; a few times we even took divergent paths around the swimmer we desired to pass and reconnected once he was behind us. When she began to pull ahead, I ramped it up a bit.

I perfectly executed a backstroke turn at the turnaround buoy. I’d made sure to find out the number of buoys before I’d started, but I was too busy trying to get around people and push people off me to actually count them during the race. I was also focusing too hard to even look at my watch until the very end. I’d be curious to know what my time was at the midpoint to see how much of a difference that current really played. I’d say it’s a good idea if you can steal a glance at your watch without slowing yourself down too much.

I swam next to Caroline throughout much of race. It’s as if we operated as a team; we drafted off each other and were never more than a few feet from each other, except at the end when she sprinted ahead and beat me by 8 seconds. (I swear, I wasn’t aware that I was so close to the end!) I came in at 29:19 — my fastest open water mile ever!

I stuck around after the Splash to catch up with swimmers and to attend the awards ceremony. Because the 20something age groups don’t tend to be as populated as the others, it was possible that I’d won an award. I left with a bronze medal, thinking I’d came in 3 out of 4. Later that morning, Elizabeth informed me I was 3 out of 12!

So, would I recommend this race? Absolutely. It was quick, and I’d say it’s a safe, comfortable race to do if one is trying to break into open water swimming for the first time.

James River Splash

Well, this report is more than a little tardy, but then again, you still have 11 months to prepare for next year’s “Splash.”

The Event: 1 mile swim in the James, at Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield County. The event is part of the James River Adventure Games/X-Terra East Championship weekend. There is also a 400 meter youth race.

The course: 1/2 mile upriver, 1/2 mile back. The “up” leg this year followed a slightly curving route, marked by a series of buoys. For the “down” leg, we were told to swim as straight a line as we wanted to the finish.

What you have to contend with: The current rounds a bend in the river above the 1/2 mile turn point, pushing you towards the south bank (on your left as you are swimming upriver). As we shall see, I didn’t really take this into account, and as a result, I went further to the left than was ideal.

Wetsuit legal? No, but you wouldn’t want to wear one, at least not this year. The water was bathtub warm. Last year it was colder. In fact, my toes went numb last year.

USMS membership required? No

The 2007 “Splash” was my first open water swim. Ever. Had no idea what I was doing, and I’d only swum a continuous mile for the first time a week before, just to see if I could do it, since I’d signed up for this race. But I enjoyed it anyway, notwithstanding that I came in dead last in my age group.

The 2008 race took place six days after the Bay Swim for me, and I can’t say that I was 100% recovered from the previous week’s exertions, but I figured that I could swim a mile even if I was tired, which shows you that in a year you can go from “Can I swim a mile?” to “Pshaw, it’s only a mile.”

The race has an in-water start, in waves, according to your expected swim time. At Endorphin Fitness’s spring open water camp, Michael Harlow advised us to prepare for the start by being in a horizontal swim position and sculling to stay in place–so you don’t have to switch from treading water to swimming when it’s time to start. Unfortunately, I forgot that advice.

There were maybe 20? 30? people in my wave? Enough that the start did involve some degree of body scrum. Allison and I were in the same wave, and had decided we’d try to draft off each other, but in the starting melee I lost track of her. Fortunately, I was wearing a suit that would have been visible from 50 miles in a heavy fog, so Allison managed to keep track of me, and at some point on the upriver swim, after we’d shaken off the crowd, I realised that she was right there with me.

I was pressed between a couple of swimmers right at the start, and the swimmer on my left and I were shoulder-to-shoulder for what seemed to be almost the entire upriver leg. Unfortunately, as far as my sighting went, I didn’t pay as much attention as I should have. I was looking upriver, but then I looked over to my right and realised that we’d veered fairly far to the left of the buoys. I cut a diagonal course to the turn buoy, but I probably could have improved my time if I’d kept closer to the buoys on this leg. Oddly, I didn’t think about that in my pre-race mental preparation, such as it was. Next year!

Despite being less than a week out from the Bay Swim, I reached the turn buoy feeling pretty good. Last year, it had seemed to take several forevers and a few eternities to get to the turn. But this year–well, I won’t go so far as to say I was there before I knew it, but that first leg seemed to go by pretty quickly.

The return leg was with the (admittedly sluggish) current. We learned in OW swim camp to have a faster turnover swimming against the current, and to stretch out your strokes when you’re swimming with the current, to take advantage of its push. So I did.

Allison and I continued to hang together, drafting off each other on the return leg. This is one event in which the drafting seemed to work out–because presently we caught up to another swimmer, and I stayed on his toes for a while. When the finish buoys came into view, I started cranking up the speed, determined that I would pour it on as much as I could for the end.

Result? I knocked four minutes off last year’s time and came in third in my age group, O happy me. (In photo, at right, with Elizabeth.)  I’m going to have to savor this one, because my next scheduled OW swim would be Chris Greeene Lake, the 2 Mile Cable Swim National Championship.

Race Report: Jack King Ocean Swim: June 15, 2008

Experiencing a battle with the ocean’s current for almost 45 minutes was excellent practice for my Alcatraz swim, which took place two weeks later. The swim took much longer than I expected, and so could Alcatraz if conditions aren’t favorable. I’d expected to finish in just over 30 minutes if I was going with the current; I came in at 43:12.

It is an overcast, grim morning. I get to the beach. There are no body markings. Weird. I am handed a bright yellow cap. I forget my goggles in my car. I’m not too early, but I have time for a quick warm-up, which I take advantage of. More and more, I’m learning that the warm-up minimizes the initial shock of the water. I’d assume the temperature was in the low- to mid-70’s. It wasn’t very cold but definitely cooler than the pool and James. I enjoy it.

After a pre-race meeting, the swimmers line up in the water. We battle the current while trying to stay parallel with the starting buoy for what seems like 10 minutes before we’re finally signaled to go. I start off quickly, but not sprinting, trying to get my pace straight. Wow, I think to myself. This current is strong. I feel like I’m making progress. I must have been swimming already for 15 minutes. I glance at my watch. 7:45. Ha. Okay, keep going.

I swim some more and glance again. 19:something. Only about 10 more minutes until I might be finished! Double ha. I know for a fact I didn’t sight enough — I learned that ocean swimming takes a lot more sighting than a lake or even a river swim. At one point I realize there aren’t too many other swimmers around me and I can see a lot of the bottom of the ocean. I was hitting sand, and wasn’t near the sandbar. Ugh! I look at the shore. I’m not that far away! What the! I swim diagonally out to sea. More effort. Zig-zag. I am going to assume I spent a lot of the race zig-zagging and thus wasting time.

I continue to get in my groove. I look at my watch. I think it’s 31: something that time. Obviously no sub-30 performance. I keep glancing up to try and spot the finish. I must be getting closer.

Where is that buoy? It’s large and orange, how can I not see it?

Fast high school kids pass me. I pass someone near the end. I finally spot the buoy, but it’s probably 10 minutes before I catch it. I complete my special backstroke turn around the buoy.

After I round the buoy, I sprint to the shore. I look behind me and the buoy is to my right — it should be to my left! The current had pushed me away from my target. Great. I’ve wasted effort. I look up. I swim diagonally to the right. You’re almost done, Allison. Kick. Hard.

I sprint up the beach. I’m handed a card with a big 58 on it, and hear “43:12.” Not too shabby for the fight I put up, and for a first ocean race! 97 swimmers started and 88 (I think) finished. In looking at the finish times of others though, I wasn’t all that off. If my strategy were better, I think I could have cut off about 5 minutes, but that’s it.

After the race, I talked to this guy who appeared to be an experienced ocean swimmer (or at least more experienced than I). He asked where I’d started, and we discussed our frustrations with treading water and fighting the current for what seemed eternity. But the whole time, we wasted energy that could have been put to use in the race. He said what I needed to do was look at where the experienced swimmers — the guys in the long, fancy suits — started. They were atop the sandbar, probably standing on it. Follow their lead. Of course they would (probably) be too fast for me to draft off, but I could at least sight them for awhile and avoid the more-currenty patches of water.

Stroking: what worked. Short choppy strokes versus long pretty ones? I FELT like I was getting farther with the long strokes, but it was easier for the current to manipulate my stroke with the long strokes. I kind of swam diagonally into the current, and that’s when I felt best.

Drafting: it didn’t work. During the race, I drafted for a couple of moments, maybe, but that was it. Every time I got close to someone, the current pushed me away.

Would I recommend this race? You bet. I am willing to guess that it’s a different race every year, so you never know how the current might treat you. Which, quite honestly, is part of the fun and beauty of open water swimming.
